Facilitation for senior team away days

Away days designed around what the team needs to leave with.

Some work needs the right people together, a question worth their time, and someone to run it so the time isn’t wasted. I design and facilitate senior team away days, as a single day or as a series that builds on itself.

How it works

Designed for the team

Every away day is designed for the team in front of me, around what it needs to leave with. That might be half a day to turn the page after a hard year, a day on how the team works together, or two days on direction for the next three to five years. Some teams want one day. Others want a series of away days, each building on the last.

Run on its feet

The design is done with you. It starts with a conversation with the leader, and often a short one-to-one with each person attending, so I arrive knowing the team. The days are practical and on their feet: timelines on the wall, live scenarios built from the trade-offs you actually face, work in small groups and as a whole team, and very few slides. They end with commitments people make out loud, specific enough to check, and a follow-up afterwards to see what held.

An example

An international pipeline inspection business

An international pipeline inspection business brought its executive team of fourteen together for a day and a half: personal and team timelines on the wall, an honest look at where the team stood, and three behaviours everyone signed up to, each backed by an “I will” made to the whole group. It came back for a session every quarter through the following year, each one designed with the business in response to the last.

An away day or team coaching?

An away day works on a question: direction, next year’s priorities, a restructure, what the team takes from a hard year. The team leaves with a decision, a plan or a set of commitments, and the day itself is what you’re buying.

Team coaching works on the team itself: how it decides, disagrees and holds itself to account, and the habits it would rather not look at. It runs over months, uses the team’s own meetings as the material, and starts with a diagnostic.

An away day can look at how a team works, and a good one will show the pattern. Changing it takes longer than a day. If you’re not sure which you need, ask what you want to be different in six months. A decision made points to an away day. A team that behaves differently points to team coaching.
